Now that the elections are over and Gilly won, I want to move on with an idea that has been long overdue that I had talked about before, and that is a process for dealing out justice, capturing bad guys, and so forth. One thing that worries me from time to time is when it comes to putting players outside of our guild in jail, because a) I don't know to what extent they are willing to put up with being jailed and b) unless they magically break out, they might end up being in there indefinitely if RP follows its logical course, which likely wouldn't be something the player is happy with. To achieve this goal I have built a new jail. With respect to Amon, his jail is very nice however it doesn't have everything we need, and Amon unfortunately hasn't been around lately, so I made a new one. It's going to be completely open to anyone on the friends list, and anyone who RPs with us can be on that friends list.
The basic principle behind this is giving the rangers the ability to actually do something with criminals in a reasonable time with reasonable punishments that don't too harshly punish the players' ability to play their characters. Here's the breakdown:
*Criminals are arrested based their breaking of laws which are recorded in a big book and given the Governor Gillian seal of approval.
*Criminals are put in jail. We have up to one real week to prosecute them, and if that fails they get to leave. It's up to us to make sure they stand before a judge.
*We put them in the little courtroom I designed and a judge and/or jury will determine their guiltiness and punishment.
Processing
There should be two main steps to processing a criminal. First, the suspect must be thoroughly searched. All armor removed. All weapons. All spellbooks (especially that pesky ninjitsu book). It's up to the rangers to be as thorough as possible. Prison clothes will be provided. Second, their name, crime, and date of incarceration must be recorded in a log book. That too will be provided.
Court Trial
A trial needs to happen within a week of incarceration. If not, then the suspect can walk free. The point of this is to keep things moving and prevent delays from slowing us down. This isn't a hard rule, just a general guideline which we can change if all involved parties are in agreement. The nature of a trial might differ based on the crime. For example, if there was a murder, the trial would involve a jury. For simple stealing, it could be just the judge hearing the case and then determining guilt or innocence. All of this will be specified in the law book. As for the judge, I had a druid character that I have been itching to play, but Gilly can appoint others as judges as she sees fit.
Punishment
Generally speaking, whatever punishments we decide, should be relatively short in real time. For example, for stealing we might say, 3 days in prison. For assault, a week. For attempted murder, two weeks. For something like murder, which results in the permanent death in someone's character, the punishment could very well be life in prison or execution, depending on the player's wishes. All of this will be determined by what's in the book of law. With the exception of life in prison or executions, the jail time should be a hard rule and expectation of anyone that wants to roleplay with us.
Jailbreak
Generally speaking the prison should be unbreakable. Characters can break out if their friends attack the prison (similar to our planned jailbreak event) or by some other imaginative means. It needs to be good though, not some lame-ass crap. Escaping by morphing into a rat should only be possible if the rangers neglect to confiscate the ninjitsu book.
The Nice Rooms
On the 3rd floor there are two bedrooms. These are general purpose, or for instances where Mylar runs off again and gets herself brainwashed, and we need to keep her confined somewhere but feel bad about putting her in a cell even though she absolutely deserves to be in one.
That about covers it. Feedback is appreciated. The laws haven't been written yet but will be discussed at the upcoming Skara Brae town meeting. Once we get this all figured out we can have a sticky that explains ranger justice in full and that way anyone outside the guild will have an idea of what to expect if they want to be a bad guy.
