The tribe was under attack. Magda Ruk knew that much. Although an orc, she had received formal training in magic by a powerful human witch, proving herself superior by dispatching her in fair combat at the end of it. The tribe for which she was now overseer, a powerful one south of Yew, had elevated her to that position due not only her intelligence but her clear leadership qualities and resourcefulness. In that regard, she had helped them fully recover from the sinister plot with the mad piper and his henchmen; had led them back to prosperity and established some resemblance of order from chaos. The male orcs revered her. Enamored by her looks (by orcish standards), snarky wit, appealing charms, and yet utter ruthlessness, they one and all nevertheless despaired of either having her as a mate or eliminating her as a weaker female. Her enemies seemed to just disappear. That, too, frightened them into submission.
The problem was sickness, a debilitating disease that caused members of her tribe to go completely mad, attacking anything and anyone around them randomly and without warning so that they had to be slain immediately. After much research, she determined that their drinking water was befouled, likely poisoned by humans. They shared the artesian wells with the Yewians and she had heard of the trouble in Yew about their water. She suspected that story was mere cover for seeking the annihilation of them all, for if outsiders were responsible, Yew would not be.
This could not stand. She meant to find out the truth. She would seek diplomatic means first, but retribution would follow quickly sans satisfaction. This had to be the way. Caring nothing about honor, this was survival and besides, she had an image to maintain.
