The note regarding the "employment" of Pea-dee the goblin bar maid lay unnoticed for several hours. It had not been placed on Deminatza's vanity, for she had relinquished that room for her own that she shared with Scar in an estate that lay to the south, the Settlement. Instead, it lay on Malissin's vanity and that evening she found it.
She was immediately alarmed by its tone. Despite not knowing precisely who was inferred, she was smart enough to read between the lines, correctly translating "gainful employment" to mean "kidnapped" or "held against her knowledge and will." She took it to the first one she met in Sanctuary which happened to be Vospar, the druid, who sat smoking by the lounge fireplace, sipping a goblet of wine.
"Good to see you, lady Malissin! Come and join me. I could use a good, friendly chat," he implored.
She did seat herself but handed the note to him. "This seems urgent," she explained, her concerned look matching her tone of voice.
Vospar read it and then reread it. "Who does this refer to?" he asked her. "Wait! It is the goblin female, the friend of Deminatza! Pea-dee! She works as barmaid at the Oasis. She seems very friendly for her kind, and she idolizes Deminatza."
Malissin smiled and nodded. "I like the little one. She brings hope and cheer to the world. She proves that all must be judged individually, not collectively."
Vospar nodded. "I would like to agree but I think she is an aberration. Most goblins are anything but friendly. That she is a misfit of her kind I have no doubt. We must do something about this. I will take the letter to my brother Itannar but Scar and Deminatza must be informed also. Leave that sad task to me my lady," he spoke somberly.
Malissin agreed. They spoke of other things for a while and then she excused herself to prepare for vespers and rest.
Vospar sighed, extinguished his pipe, and set down his goblet. Itannar would be there soon but it was not too late to pay Scar and Deminatza a visit at their home.
