1/22/2023 -- Fiction: A Window In Time
1/23/2023 - Our story begins in the halls of the Emerald Fist, where during a gathering of its members, a tap at their gates led in turn to the arrival of a messenger bearing a proposal from his mysterious mistress. The servant Ethan came to entice the Fist into entering into the service of Lady Fairchild, a self-described seeker of adventure. Having grown weary of the service of common mercenaries, whose intentions and scruples were often questionable, Lady Fairchild sought a more honorable company of adventurers, and having heard of the Emerald Fist and their exploits, she believed them to be a group in whom she could place her trust. There was, however, one small catch.
Before the Lady would meet them in person, she had in mind a mission that would need to be completed as a test, both for her to evaluate the Emerald Fist as well as for the Emerald Fist to evaluate her in turn. Though this entire proposal seemed like a strange game, the members of the Fist reluctantly agreed to take part. Ethan gave them their mission: they would need to venture into deepest corridors of Dungeon Covetous and retrieve from it a treasure, namely: a golden shield said to be an ancestral relic of a noble family, the Farrows. Their mission would be complete upon returning to the Emerald Keep with the shield and handing it over to Ethan.
The Emerald Fist went to work, plunging into the dark depths of Covetous and fending off the local monstrosities with their accrued experience until coming across a scared young man hiding in the corner of one of the dungeon's chambers, the golden shield in his hands. The man identified himself as Oliver Farrow, and had come looking for the shield at the behest of a band of brigands that had abducted his younger brother. However, he had gotten in over his head in the dungeon and found himself unable to escape. The Emerald Fist wasted no further time and helped him escape.
At the Keg & Anchor in Trinsic, they sat down with Oliver to learn of his story. Oliver, the descendant of a noble lineage that had long ago lost its reputation, had always believed the ancestral shield of his family line to have been lost. After his younger mysteriously disappeared, he was contacted by the abductors and coerced into recovering the shield himself, as a ransom for the boy's life. Upon recovering the shield, he would then have to deliver it to a henchman near to the Britain graveyard.
After hearing his tale, the Emerald Fist agreed to accompany the man to the graveyard, where they encountered a ruffian whose face was concealed under a hood. Despite the threats, the man remained insistence that the younger brother would be harmed should he not return with the shield in hand. Ultimately, Oliver agreed to hand it over, and the mysterious man departed. Offering his thanks, Oliver promised to follow up with the Fist on any news of the matter, and whether his younger brother would be returned safely.
As the Emerald Fist returned to the Keep, they found the servant Ethan waiting for them and the shield. Yet with nothing to offer, they spoke of their encounter with Oliver and the brigand. Seemingly satisfied with the explanation, Ethan departed to report to his mistress, promising to return once she had made her decision.
