It appeared a small fortress, that northern outpost belonging to the Rangers of Spiritwood, and it was quite visible to those approaching by both land and the nearby sea. On that late summer morning, two rangers stood upon the roof, weapons drawn and gasping for breath, surrounded by splatters of blood and broken arrows. Yet all appearances to the contrary, this encounter between Corinna, elderly Keeper of the Rangers of Spiritwood and wielder of the hatchet, and Tobias Cardont, young scout and shooter of bows, was a peaceful one.
"Congratulations, Tobias," Corinna stated with a warm smile, "you have passed your test. Your knowledge of the virtues was quite impressive; it's almost as if you knew the answers to all of my questions ahead of time." At her companion's frown, the Keeper chuckled. "It was a joke, Tobias, I'm not accusing you of nothing. Though given our previous discussions, I understand why you'd think otherwise. I know I haven't always been supportive of you joining our ranks."
"Why?" His only response.
"Because the past often pulls at the present, even when wisdom dictates it's best put aside."
"I don't -- "
"It matters not," the older woman shook her head. "Let's return to the matter of your final task."
Tobias nodded twice and quickly. For it was only this one task that remained between his present circumstances and achievement his heart's desire. Before he could advance from the initiate rank of scout to a full-member of the Rangers of Spiritwood. Until he could become a Seeker.
