Knowing the old soldiers tricks, Oona wound her way through the jungle far from the walls of the city. A broken branch here.... Rocks piled there.... The clues lead her to the one person that was her parent. She told lots of people lots of things; but never the absolute truth.
Talimus would know just what to say to her. That quiet resolve they all had with her and now he was the only one left. Finally the clearing came into sight; the small cottage resembled more of a stable leaning precariously against the outcrop of rock. His figure was framed in the doorway. Oona stood silently for a moment at the edge of the clearing staring at him.
A bellowing laugh filled the air. “Here I gave up hope for you girl.” Talimus looked her over a moment silently, soften his tone, “Come on something must have spooked you.”
With each step Oona seems to revert back to her prior life following the wagons and soldiers from battle field to battle field. ...The memories of countless nights around the campfires, listening to men tell dirty jokes as the smell of the fresh game cooked, the grease making the fire spit…. …The men tossing their cloaks over her when it rained... …Showing her how to hold the bow upright... …Showing her what could be eaten from the woods...
Pulling her close Talimus slapped her hard against the back.... “Out with it girl...” was all he said as he guided her into the small hovel.
