John Merrick
Description
John stands at approximately 5'10" with a tanned complexion and a sturdy physique honed from years at sea. In his mid-40's, his black hair is beginning to gray a little bit, but he is somewhat handsome and in good shape for his age. Though he is a little rough around the edges, John has certain refined and civilized qualities that set him apart from the typical cliche dullard pirate ingrained in him from his Vesperian childhood.History
John Merrick, originally named John Hewitt, was born in the city of Vesper and raised in a comfortable home under the guidance of two loving parents. Reeling predictably against his father's strict rules, John signed on the first boat that would have him in his late adolescent years and never looked back. "Johnny" as he came to be known among his peers became a skilled seaman and was taking well to the challenges of living at sea until his boat was attacked by a pirate called Isocrates Saroch. Having survived the attack, Isocrates took John under his wing and thus began his life of crime. It was during these days he adopted the surname "Merrick" to obscure his origins. Eventually John Merrick succeeded the aging Isocrates as captain and became the effective leader of the crew, with Isocrates staying behind and providing advice and guidance to his pupil. Because of his upbringing, John never had a taste for violence and strove to keep his work as low-profile as possible. He still earned some attention from authorities but never enough to be considered a major threat.Present
Merrick came to be known by the Rangers of Spiritwood when the Thief Guildmaster Kalaric Anders convinced him to kidnap Lord William Harford's daughter Ashley for ransom. Kalaric, however, had other plans and murdered Lord Harford, putting Merrick in a bind and compelling him to strike a quick deal with the rangers and Ashley's mother to get rid of her before attracting more heat. The whole ordeal convinced Merrick to leave the piracy business, and reuniting with Renna, the two departed with their generous share of the ransom. Unfortunately for John, Renna betrayed him later and stole his money and his ship, the Queen Dawn's Revenge. John was able to acquire a smaller, older boat, and named it the Bloody Renna, swearing to cut her heart out if he ever came across her again. In time he found himself in the company of Dezera Blackwell and other Jhelom mercenaries after taking up honest trade and keeping a low profile. He joined their company and works jobs from time to time at the behest of Dezera.
