Deraj
Description
History
Deraj was an orphan raised in a monastery by an order of monks and scholars who taught him to read and write and educated him in virtue, philosophy, history, and art. He lived there peacefully until a time when the legions of Minax began to invade Britannia, and the monastery and its inhabitants were destroyed in a raid. Deraj and a handful of monks escaped.Years later Deraj found himself among an order of fanatics calling themselves the Inquisition, whose purpose was to hunt users of magic. Though certain kinds of magic were more discriminated against and less objectionable to hunt, as Britannia became more tolerant of magic over the years it became harder for the Inquisition to hold the line of its convictions against modern sensibilities and soon found itself an outdated and disliked group. It was forced to disband under mysterious circumstances and Deraj left to travel Britannia alone, his solitary quest to hunt daemonic forces, the unliving, the magicians that dabbled recklessly or with malicious intent in the arts of the daemonic and necromancy.
In his travels he has battled against several daemonic entities, achieving victory over some, while failing to completely vanquish others. This has left him with persistent enemies which he believe can strike at any moment his guard is down, and thus he strives to be prepared for battle as often as is possible and remains on constant lookout for daemons that may be seeking him out to exact their vengeance.
After completing a recent quest Deraj found himself in Trinsic in the company of others seeking to form an order to protect Trinsic. Seeing the honor and conviction among his new peers, he decided to join the order, the Holy Fist, in order to lend a sword and help to steer it down an honorable path.
While in the Holy Fist, Deraj had helped to pursue the Healer and his band of shadowy cultists known as the Broken Ankh, ultimately culminating in an elaborate ritual conducted by the Healer to open a portal directly into the mysterious realm known as the dark woods, and draw into it a powerful demon from the void. After the ritual had been successfully completed, and the Healer and his demon had disappeared through the fading portal, Deraj, consumed by an unyielding desire to hunt demons, charged into the portal, disappearing into the dark woods.
Present
During the reign of terror of the necromancer Thalmain Shaste, the devious necromancer, seeking still to fulfill instruction given to him by the Healer to experience a vision, was thrust into a living vision where he found himself at a kind of intersection between Sosaria and the dark woods. In this brief moment he crossed paths with a frantic warrior that came to his aid while being pursued by strange, shadowy monsters. Shaste quickly recognized this person as a man he had encountered in Sosaria that he knew as Deraj, though Deraj had no recollection of the necromancer, or even his own identity. Shaste helped the man escape the woods and gave him refuge in his tower. When Shaste's enemies eventually invaded the tower, Deraj, not recognizing his old allies, fought against them to the death. Before entirely succumbing to death, however, the mage Ezekial Crowley made use of a magical gem that reversed Deraj's temporal state to only moments before. In a state of panic, Deraj fled the tower while everyone was occupied and disappeared into the wilderness.
